Is the Mercola Healthy Pets Dental Gel safe for cats? Peppermint oil and thyme oil may not be safe for cats.

My cat may have had an adverse reaction to the Mercola Healthy Pets Dental Gel.  I posted about it with details on the Doctor Karen Becker Facebook Page yesterday, and now my post is no longer showing up.  (It appears that someone who's authorized to use the Doctor Karen Becker Facebook Page intentionally hid or deleted my post.)

Peppermint oil and thyme oil, which are both ingredients in the gel, may or may not be safe for cats, although the gel is recommended by Dr. Becker for cats and dogs.  Please be careful and if anyone else has an issue please share.

Here is my Facebook post which is no longer showing up:

Regarding the Mercola Healthy Pets Dental Gel and my cat's potentially bad reaction to it:

We gave it to her four times, and then shortly thereafter she started eating less, and then she stopped eating altogether. We took her to our vet for an exam and bloodwork, which came back fine, and we got her sub-cutaneous fluids twice and an enema, and she came home and ate a little bit. She also had x-rays during that visit, which didn't show anything strange. We just took her for an ultrasound, and were pretty worried about the results, but those were fine as well. It seems like a logical possibility could be that the dental gel upset her body somehow. I just wanted to put it out there in case it's happened to anyone else. I know I can't say it definitely was the cause, but she was completely fine until we gave the dental gel to her.

So in a nutshell, my cat was a perfectly healthy aging cat until we gave her the Mercola Healthy Pets Dental Gel and three weeks later, we will be extremely relieved if she pulls through.

Is peppermint oil safe for cats?  Some sources say no.  Is thyme oil safe for cats?  Some sources say no.  I regret trusting that this would be safe without looking up each ingredient myself.  I watched the video on the product page and was sold, and I think this product needs more evaluation before it's sold to more pet owners.

  1. This gel seems to be effective in curbing tarter on my Chihuahua's teeth but she hates the flavor so it's a challenge each time to brush her teeth. I wish they could reformulate this product to remove the pepperment oil. I tasted it myself and it's way to strong for me let alone a dog or cat.
